Description
For initial diagnostic testing for COVID-19, CDC recommends collecting and testing upper respiratory samples.
Nasopharyngeal (NP) specimens are the first choice for swab-based testing for COVID-19.
For patients with expectoration, doctors can collect sputum samples and use them for testing.
CellMedical’s flocked swabs and shipping systems have been used in clinics and home testing kits since the beginning of the pandemic.
Below are our recommended shipping systems and COVID swab products.
Our flock swabs are ideal for nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal specimen collection when COVID-19 infection is suspected.
CellMedical nylon flocked swabs provide the best sample collection because they are able to collect more samples at the point of collection and release the entire sample faster.
- The swab head is nylon material and the swab shaft is ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene);

Collection method:
- If possible, have the patient sit with the head tilted back 70 degrees.
- Hold the swab into the nostril, and gently insert the cotton swab into the nostril along the bottom of the nasal septum.
- Continue all the way back until you reach the back of the nasopharynx (the distance from the nostril to the opening outside the ear).
- Rotate the swab several times while it is in contact with the nasopharyngeal wall.
- Then slowly take out the nasal swab.
- And immerse the nasal flocked swab head into a tube (VTM Tube) containing 2-3 ml of virus preservation solution.
